Dolly Parton launched the Imagination Library in 1995 to foster an early love of reading and learning in her hometown of Sevier County, Tenn. The Imagination Library has since become the highest-quality, most recognizable, and most effective book gifting resource in the world. Policy makers, funders, early childhood organizations, and families trust the Imagination Library to inspire a love of reading among children of all ages.

How It Works
This premier program mails free high-quality, age-appropriate books to registered children every month from birth to age 5. Children enrolled from birth receive 60 books by the time they graduate from the Imagination Library program. The Foundation covers overhead costs and negotiates wholesale pricing for the books, while local community partners fundraise to cover the cost of mailing.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is expanding in DuPage County, mailing free, age-appropriate books monthly to children under five. Below are the local towns currently enrolling participants:

Since launching in 1995, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has become the preeminent early childhood book-gifting program in the world. As the flagship program of The Dollywood Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, it has gifted over 300 million free books across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. This incredible reach is made possible through funding shared by The Dollywood Foundation and devoted Local Community Partners.
The Imagination Library mails more than 3 million high-quality, age-appropriate books directly to children’s homes each month, completely free of charge from birth to age five. Dedicated to making reading accessible to all children, the program has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind since 2011 to provide titles in audio and braille formats. Furthering this commitment to inclusivity, the Imagination Library proudly introduced a bilingual (English/Spanish) book option in 2024. Through these diverse and accessible stories, Dolly envisions creating a lifelong love of reading, inspiring children everywhere to Dream More, Learn More, Care More, and Be More™.
