Organization Mission:
CREO is a pre-college program that provides resources and relationships to motivated Latino/Hispanic high school students in DuPage County. Our program’s family-centered approach also provides support to empower Spanish speaking parents so that families can learn and make decisions about higher education together.
Description of Volunteer Opportunities:
We recruit volunteers to serve as academic coaches (mentoring and tutoring) to work with one high school student for an academic year. coaches and students meet over zoom one evening a week and utilize our curriculum and tools to guide their time and address student needs.
Minimum Age Requirement:
We typically work with students in college and adults who have college degrees.
Skills or Experience Necessary:
Volunteers could be current college students or adults with college degrees. Volunteers should be good listeners and enjoy talking with young people in a non-judgmental way. Volunteers should be easy-going, able to share about their own challenges and mistakes -and create a safe space for students to build trust and ask questions too. Our volunteers do not need to be experts in all academic areas, but we do try to match students with volunteers based on their academic needs.
Many of our volunteers are also first-generation college students or from similar social and cultural backgrounds. This is great but not necessary.
